Vaucluse lies in the southern part of France, with the Rhone River on the west and the Alps to the east.

Much of the Vaucluse dates back to Roman times as can be witnessed in Vaison La Romaine with its digs and upper mediaeval city as well as in Orange which has the best preserved of all Roman Theaters. In Cavaillon and Carpentras are Arches of Triumph and near Bonnieux is the Pont Julien Roman Bridge.

The beautiful walled city of Avignon lays on the banks of the River Rhone. The city grew with the Romans one hundred years before Christ. Today it is famous not only for the bridge but also for one of Europe's finest theatre festivals. It is worth strolling around the Joseph Vernet and St Agricol streets, the district of la Balance and the large Republic avenue.

Beloved by artists and film directors alike, the Luberon was immortalised by Peter Mayle in �a Year in Provence.

The pretty villages perched on the hillsides include such famous names as Bonnieux,  Lacoste and Gordes with its XVIth Century Chateau, and Roussillon with its distinctive ochre coloured cliffs. The department benefits from proximity to the coast, Marseilles or Nimes airports and the TGV in Avignon.
