Savoie is one of the
principle ski vacation destinations. Originally part of the
ancient duchy of Savoie, now divided into Haut Savoie and
Savoie, the département of Savoie borders Italy to the East
and Switzerland to the north.
Among some of its best
known ski holiday destinations are are the Trois Vallées,
Courchevel, Val Thorens and Méribel. Val d'Isère is a
favourite with British skiers and Albertville, set in the
Tarentaise, was the scene of the 1992 Winter Olympics. Tignes
has less of the charm of other ski resorts, it has the
advantage that you can ski there in the summer as well as the
winter.
Les Arc has some of the
best skiing terrain in the Savoie region and is the perfect
playground for skiers and boarders of all abilities. The
resort has more than 1.5 million skier visits annually on 692
hectares of ski runs.
The ancient town of
Chamb'ry switched hands between the dukes of Savoie and Italy
to finally end up in France as late as 1860. The town
overlooks the Lake of Bourget and has the Alp mountains rising
to the East.
The ski trains run by the
Eurostar go to Bourg St Maurice and provides a useful; way of
getting to the region. There are some impressive mountain
passes many of which can only be crossed in summer including
Col de l'Iseran, the highest pass in Europe at 2,764 metres
and the slightly less elevated Col du Galibier and the Col du
Petit St Bernard. The mountains have good slopes for downhill
and many open areas and woods used for cross country skiing.
Rich in history due to the frontiers, the mountains provided a
natural defence and there are many fortified castles and
forts. The Savoie is also an excellent summer destination,
with many outdoor activities, hiking, gliding, delta, cycling,
exploring... For water sports, the rivers and lakes have much
to offer.
