Situated in the south west
France and facing the Atlantic ocean, Poitou Charenete is fast
becoing a popular destination and attracts rich Parisiens.
The port of La Rochelle is
a major landmark and destination for this coastal area. The
magnificent fortress city holds many attractions for the
tourist. There are two well know islands off the coast near La
Rochelle, Ile de Re and Ile d'Oleron, past Rochefort. La
Rochelle also has a large aquarium and what is claimed to be
France’s largest zoo.
Royan, La Rochelle’s local
tourist rival attracts thousands who make the most of some
fine sandy beaches and a seemingly endless waterside fish
restaurants.
The old naval port of
Rochefort is interesting to visit and there is a major
project underway to build a replica of the frigate Hermione,
the ship that took the French general La Fayette to the New
World to fight alongside the Americans against the English in
1780. Fouras and Chatelailon are also prime destinations
Throughout the department
there are numerous nature reserves, bird watching sites and a
forest museum. The beautiful, wooded Saintonge area is full of
history and an important centre of Romanesque architecture.
Just east of the Charente-Maritime
is the famous town of Cognac and just south of the department
is the major city of Bordeaux
Local industries are fishing, shell fish and salt while inland
there is butter and eau-de-vie. The area boasts over 2,400
hours of sunshine a year.
