Picardy is the first region and the historical beginning of France and is a treasure-trove of art and natural beauty.
France itself was born in this northern province located between the Marne and the Somme. Here the Franks - ancestors of the French - settled down. It is a vast plateau region divided by the rivers Somme and Oise. It is a small coastal line on the English Channel of just 60km. The departement is split into three main areas: Baie de Somme, Amiens et Amienois, Vallee de la haute Somme.
With little industry except around Amiens, it sits on the
river banks of the river Somme, and is halfway between Paris
and Calais.
Amiens is the capital and the town is home to one of the worlds
most impressive cathedrals and the largest Gothic buildings in
France, built in 1152 and then destroyed by lightning.
Rebuilding began in 1220 and lasted 25 years and it is listed
with UNESCO. The tomb of Jules Verne is in the Madeleine
cemetery.
Somme is historically important with the huge military cemeteries from the Great War.
Aisne, with an almost English climate,is dominated by agriculture. Oise, named after the river Oise, is now part of the suburbs of Paris. Its capital is Beauvais.

Pas de Calais is as far north as you can get in France and is the first sight that ferry and Eurotunnel passengers see of the country. With just 21 miles of sea separating England from France, on a clear day from Calais you can see the white cliffs of Dover.
