Pas
de Calais is as far north as you can get in France and
is the first sight that ferry and Eurotunnel passengers see of
the country. With just 21 miles of sea separating England
from France, on a clear day from Calais you can see the white
cliffs of Dover.
Although Calais port, the Eurotunnel exit and hypermarkets can
be bit chaotic, it doesn't take long to get into real France.
Booze cruises apart, the Calais the region boasts many great
towns.
Boulogne is all too often passed by. Boulogne is a major
fishing port with a splendid cathedral and castle as well as a
renowned marine centre. At Agincourt; the WW2 museums are
terrific.
The
little towns and villages dotted around the Pas de Calais
region are appealing - try the villages between Saint-Omer and
Montreuil which has magnificent Gothic monasteries and
Chateaux. Arras has appealing squares, surrounded by arcades
and tall Flemish houses.
