Nievre is one of four regions
of Burgundy. The small city of Nevers is located on the banks
of the river Loire which passes through the region. Set
against a backdrop of wheatfields, the city offers a lovely
outline with the catherdral towering above all around.
This
small provincial city sits on the confluence of the rivers
Loire and Nièvre and is known for its nougatines and fine
porcelain which are made in three workshops and sold in a few
elegant, shops in town. The old town of Nevers dates back to
the 12th century and in the summer stages an open-air concert
programme.
The small town of Briare,
boasts a spectacular viaduct built in 1890 by Gustave Eiffel
who built the Eiffel Tower which is more than 600 metres long
and carries the Canal Lateral du Loire across the river.
