The Manche is also the French name for the English Channel. This department is almost a peninsular and points to the North-West below England with the islands of Jersey and Guernsey lying a few miles to the west. The area played a very important strategic role during the second World War.

The department of Calvados, France is on the Northern Coast helps make up the region of Basse-Normandy and is famous for its Calvados brandy.From the sandy beaches of the rugged coastline to the peaceful farming plains of Pays d’Auge and onto the rocky peaks of Suisse-Normande, Calvados is a land of contrasts ranging from sandy beaches to the farming plains of Pays d'Auge.

The most visited city in Calvados is Bayeux. where the Bayeux Tapestry is displayed. The beach of Juno is situated in Calvados, one of the five  beaches used on D-Day. The Juno Beach Centre at Courseulles-sur-Mer commemorates the landings of 1944.

Caen was the scene of some vicious battles after D-Day, and was largely destroyed but the ruins of the castle and the two Abbeys, build by William the Conqueror remain.
     Deauville is a summer tourist favourite holiday destination with sandy beaches and top class restaurants , a race course and casino.
