Tourism is a growing industry on
Languedoc Roussillon but still in its infancy. The region is
well served by low cost airlines into Carcassonne, Nimes and
Perpignan and Montpellier international airport. Languedoc
Roussillon has mild winters and long hot summers as well as
200 miles of sandy coastline.
Fanned by the breezes of the Mistral and
Tramontane, the seaside is a paradise for sailing enthusiasts
and windsurfers and with 20 golf courses, 6,300 kilometres of
trails and skiing in the Massif Central and Eastern Pyrenees,
the region is a delight for sports lovers.
Wine production is one of the mainstays
of the economy of Languedoc Roussillon. The wine produced
there has changed considerably in the past decade and has
moved from concentrating on volume to emphasising quality.
The nearby convenience of ski stations
makes weekend skiing pastime.
The Aude region of
Languedoc Roussillon stretches from the Mediterranean in the
east to Castelnaudary in the west, the Montagne Noire in the
north and the Pyrénées in the south.
The coast is in sharp
contrast to the mountain areea with miles of sandy beaches for
family holidays. The Canal du Midi is ideal for barge holidays
or canal boat trips.
