Franche-Comté, meaning Free County, was once part of Burgundy and struggled to remain independent of the French crown - it was a province of the Holy Roman Empire until annexed by Louis XIV in 1674.

The capital of Franche-Comté, Besançon, is a classic 17th century city with a tradition of clockmaking. France-Comté is divided into two, with gently rolling farmland in the Saône valley and high Alpine scenery to the east.

Franche-Comté is a cattle breeding area and specialises in salt meats. Specialities are brési (dried smoked beef), Morteau sausage, Montbéliard sausage, Luxeuil ham and Ballon des Vosges (smoked shoulder).
