The Dordogne is a holidaymakers paradise. The capital of prehistoric man, the Dordogne is one of the most picturesque départements of France, famous for its variety and beauty of the landscape through which the river flows. Dordogne is a department of the Aquitaine region in southwest France where there is the famous Perigord. Sandwiched between the green hills of the Loire and the High Pyrenees, this region of south west France is famous for its majestic river and grand chateaux.Famous places include Lascaux caves about 30km snorth of Sarlat which hold many mysteries, Marqueyssac gardens, medieval Sarlat, prehistoric caves in the Vezere Valley and Chateau Castelnaud. Cross the eastern border of the Dordogne region into Lot, and you will find the Gouffre de Padirac. The enormous chasm at Padirac is about 99 metres around the rim, and you will descend 75 metres to enter the cave system. After the initial descent, you get in a boat for an eerie trip along a subterranean stream, and then pass through various underground caverns full of extraordinary rock formations.
