Charente is famous for its double-distilled brandy of which 80 per cent is exported and which supports the prosperous town of Cognac.
Cognac is a prosperous town with medieval alleyways spreading out from a delightful riverside quarter. Here are the largest concentration of chais or wine cellars where fine brandy or Cognac is matured. It's not hard to spot these as their walls are covered with fungi that thrives on the alcohol fumes given off during the maturing process.
There are many Cognac houses to visit including Cognac Otard or Hennessy Cognac which keeps 180,000 barrels in stock. There are plenty of other sights including the Ancien Chateau - a 15th-16th-century chateau or go out of town to discover places like Gensac-la Pallue situated on the marshland with its 12th-century Romanesque church.
Surrounding Cognac are rolling vineyards and villages dotted with small chateaux. A good for walking and for a chance for a refreshing swim, head to the pools of the river Antenne. The cathedral city of Angouleme is worth visiting with its stunning cathedral and quaint, narrow streets.
Angouleme is split into an upper town, known as le Plateau and a lower town which includes everything outside the ramparts. The Cathedrale St-Pierre was first built in the 12th-century and has been rebuilt four times.
The north ramparts give the best views over the Charente Valley.
Angouleme's other claim to fame is the Centre National de la Bande Dessinee de l'Image, a museum and multimedia centre
dedicated to comic strip art and cartoons.
