Alsace is like a narrow ribbon
stretching from the Swiss border in the south up to the German
border in the north. It enjoys a semi-continental climate
which is ideal for gardeners and wine makers.
Alsace is full of medieval towns and villages which sit in the
stunning countryside. In summer the half timbered buildings
are alight with colour; geraniums and petunias cascading down
the side of the houses.
Three big towns are the focus of the county, the financial
center of Strasburg, the industrial center of Mulhouse and the wine
center of Colmar. All of these bustling centers offer excellent hotels,
no matter what your needs and budget.
The region of Lorraine is famous for its
quiche and General De Gaulle's double-barred cross, the symbol
of Lorraine chosen by the resistance fighters in World War 2.
Lorraine has two elegant cities, both of which were capitals
at one time. Nancy is popular for its art nouveau architecture
and 18th century buildings. Set on the River Moselle , 33
miles north of Nancy is Metz, a university city which boasts
outstanding churches and museums, miles of footpaths and large
landscaped gardens. Metz is also famous for its stained glass
and stunning cathedral.
A strategic position at the crossroads of Europe gives rise to Lorraine's long and turbulent history. The region was the site of the battle of Verdun in WW1 in which one million men died and veterans still come here on Armistice Day although their numbers are falling.
Vosges is famous for the huge forest and wood industries and most visitors are attracted there by its superb mountains, pine forests, lakes and valleys.
Vosges also boasts quality
skiing and ski lovers head there for its ski resorts. The Parc
Naturel Regional des Ballons appeals for cycling, riding,
fishing, walking and golf.
The Rhine and Meuse rivers make Vosges a popular place for
thermal spas such as Vittel and Bains-les-Bains.
Vosges has many picturesque villages with churches, abbeys and
castles. The plains to the northeast are where most of the
department's historic and religious monuments are found. To
the southwest lies the Plateau de la Voge which stretches from
Remiremont to Vittel.
